surrealism steven

1)    3 surreal artists: Salvador Dali, Vincent van Gogh, max Ernst

2)
a) In Salvador Dali’s “the persistence of memory” there are 3 clocks kind of melting and being shaped by gravity on some kind of beach with a hill in the background. This depicts a world of timelessness to me, like a dream or a landscape of imagination. Maybe he is trying to express that time comes and goes without warning hence the clocks melting.
b) In Vincent van Gogh’s “starry night over the Rhone” 2 people are walking by a body of water in a city, and there are a lot of stars that are very big. I think this focuses a lot of attention on the stars because they represent light to a dark world at night. To me this depicts that he believes that the luminosity of the stars out does that of the city.
c) In Max “Ernst’s gypsy rose lee”, there is a reflecting lake of the orange trees above it. There are also 2 women dressed as part of the nature, which kind of makes it look like they live there. There is an opening to the light behind them to suggest that this is a good place to be. I think this depicts a good time in his life when things are going good.
3) The surrealist movement began in the early 1920s, around the time of WW1.

4) It was a reaction to the “irrationality, and destruction” of WW1

5) Most were from France

6) I think it is important because it changed the way that we view art as a whole. Without it art would have evolved to be too real with no real imagination or purpose. People would view art as easy and slowly it would become a failure until brought back .
