Summary
Students will be
branding their self-identity though a logo design. This is a valuable skill to
learn in case students ever decide to think of company image or plan to start
their own business. To begin you must think about the image in which you want
to be portrayed. For example, are you Fossil watch, or a Rolex watch? Think
about the image that both companies portray and how they do so within their
marketing.
Procedures:
1. Research,
defining, compare and contrast (50 points)
Submit all of the following questions and
images into one post to the blog.
•
Research and explain in your own words how symbolism works. (10 points)
•
Research and explain how logos work (10 points)
• In
your own words describe what the similarities and differences are between
“logos” and “symbolic” images. (20 points)
• In your own
words describe the value of learning the process of a logo design (10 points)
2. Inspiration (30 points)
You will now
find inspirational logo designs that should give you an idea of a direction you
can take on your own logo design. Find 3 logos you find to be interesting and
post them to the blog. Next to each logo, describe how the design successfully portrays
the company.
3. Concept
map (30 points)
Open up the
application “Inspiration” on the computer and begin creating a web map with your
name in the center. At this stage you’re thinking about the verbs and things
that define who you are. Creating branches out from your name, write verbs that
describe your personality. Along with this, create branches of topics that you
enjoy doing (biking, cooking, video games, etc). You must have a minimum of three separate branches.
4. Concept
sketches (100 points)
At this stage
you will experiment and play around with sketching logos using your initials,
your name, and topics that came up in your concept map. Your objective is to meld
these topics together in a variety of different sizes, shapes and fonts to
create 10 unique and original logos.
You will now
need to receive critical input from the instructor, peers, family and friends
about your logo design. Your trying to get input from others so you may refine
your logo to a further professional level. Write and post a statement titled
“logo feedback” onto the blog and reflect on some of the suggestions that you
received.
6. Digitizing (40 points)
Using Adobe
Illustrator you will now use the pen tool and the layers pallet to create a clean,
professional logo design. We are using Adobe Illustrator because it utilizes
“vector” lines, which yields sharpers and cleaner lines. Once this logo is
complete you will post it to the blog. (Grading criteria found below)
Accompanying
your final logo design describe how your design choices successfully portray
you and your self branding.
Evaluation:
- Did students create a logo that symbolizes them self as an artistic brand?
- Did the student implement symbols that
reflect their concept map
- Did students construct a graphic that is
“simple” and readable?
- Did students’ creative process lend to a
clear and refined professional product.
- Were the students successfully able to use
Adobe Illustrator to construct their logo design?
