Course Outline

Assignments
This first semester of assignments are designed to coincide with the development of computer graphics throughout history since the 1960’s. Students will experience the issues and revolution that artists experienced when scientists such as Ivan Sutherland developed Sketchpad to create imagery. The assignments in this class will parallel the progression of computer graphics after the development of sketchpad and the efficiency that evolved.

Computer Programing - Context Free
In this assignment students will travel to the beginning of computer graphics as they take on the role of computer scientist. Students will begin by exploring the Cartesian coordinate system (algebra) and computer programming to plot simple imagery.

Pixel Art – Alias Edges
In this assignments students will create a creature while mimicking the low bit and minimal resolution computers of the 1980s. This assignment will be utilizing Photoshop and will require a written reflection that compares this assignment with the last.

Logo Design – Vector Edges
This assignment will require students to explore the world of graphic design and concept of symbolism. In the world of graphic design “simple is more” and options should be abundant. Students will be creating a self-portrait logo or imaginary company that will travel through the process of concept mapping, sketching and eventually vectoring.

Photomontage
Students will increase their knowledge and skills of Adobe Photoshop. Tools such as layer masking and the concept of light sources (directional light and cast shadows) will be a main topic of this assignment.

CD Packaging – Adobe Photoshop
The Cd packaging assignment is designed for students to create a physical product. Students will initially work in groups to figure out the dimensions of a jewel cd case and problem solve the technical aspects of Photoshop. Students will be creating a front booklet and back cover that works harmoniously with their choice of music on the cd.

3D Modeling – Maya *Computer graphics come full circle (mathematical background)
Students will begin to explore the world of 3-Dimensional computer graphics and the tools needed model objects. After learning the fundamental tools students will construct 3 models for the animation prop resources folder. Topics such as texturing, lighting and rendering will also be covered at this time.

Digital Sculpting – Maya and Mudbox
This digital sculpting assignment will require student to create a basemesh in Maya that they will eventually take into Mudbox and sculpt onto. Students will think about sculpting a bust of a creature that focuses on form, details, texture and surface color.

3D Animation – Maya
After students have explored and feel comfortable with Maya’s modeling tools the class will move towards creating animation. Fundamental topics such as the 12 principles of animation will all be covered. From here students will be using pre-rigged characters and the principles of animation to create a 5+ second animation of their choice.

Second Semester Independent Project
The second semester assignment is designed for students to independently/collaboratively explore any of the mediums covered first semester. This assignment will entail the students first researching inspirational artists, choosing and writing a project proposal, drawing concepts, and posting weekly progress and reflections to the class blog. This project-based assignment relies heavily on independence/collaboration, creative thinking, problem solving, setting and achieving goals, reflecting and reworking. All of these steps are important skills to hone and experience in our 21st century world. Eventually these projects will be placed on a class demo reel and be played on a large screen TV at the event centers State Art Symposium. Other work created over the year may also that be exhibited at this time.
