A logo is intended to an audience so they know what that company,individual, whatever does. If you see something on the television you immediately associate it with something. While a symbol actually becomes what it shows. You see a symbol like the american flag, what does it represent? well of course freedom, prosperity, and for the greater good. That pops up right as you see the flag, its a symbol for these things. And that is the difference between logo and symbol. They both show something, so in that respect they are similar. Also each represents something to the average person, its an image to explain or show an opinion.
