Man Ray(1890-1976)
Hans Bellmer(1902-1975)
Dora Maar(1907-1997)
Man Ray’s surreal photo depicts a
woman in black in white with the mouth eyes and hair standing out more than
anything else. This woman seems to be looking at something on the lower left
part of the screen. Her left arm seems to disappear at the elbow, as well as
part of her neck seems to be covered by some sort of light.
Hans Bellmer’s photo is of one of
the dolls he created in black and white. The doll seems to be made of robotic
parts and random accessories, like the left leg being covered in mesh and the
stomach having robotic parts protruding from it. The image is meant to be sexy
and mysterious, with complex electric machines just coming out when this image
was made ideas about the future were floating around like a robotic woman.
Dora Maar’s photo is an armadillo
that seems to be standing upright (this is actually just a armadillo suspended
in formaldehyde); this Photo is also in black and white. The Armadillo was
considered repulsive back when this photo was published so this was an attempt
to make something gross adorable. The armadillo hands have long claws and are
right next to its face.
The
surrealist art movement occurred around the 1920s, right around the time
of WW1, some artist actually believed that WW1 was caused by their art.
The movement was based in Paris France and many of the artist were forced
to escape the city because of the war and went to many different regions. The
movement continued until the Second World War.
The
Surrealist movement occurred because of the war going on around the artist
that made them want to escape reality; they did this thru surreal art.
Some of the art represents the artists innermost desires, mostly that of
lust.
Most
of the Surrealist artists were from Europe, more specifically Paris
France.
The images make us think of what
is really possible, because if you see something impossible you will first
wonder if it really is possible to do instead of calling it fake right away.
