Surreal Photography
- Roberto Matta (1911-2002) - Shown in this picture is of an ancient looking god or something that would have high power and authority. Splitting the desks and tearing apart the room with a movement of him separating his arms. I think Roberto was trying to display the power that a teacher can have by using a familiar powerful figure.
- Man Ray (1890-1976) - In this photo Man Ray displays a picture of woman’s back and located on her back are two f-holes that would typically be found on a violin or some other acoustic instrument. I think this displays that just like a violin, a women can sound bad or good depending on how you treat and touch her/it.
- Dorothea
Tanning (1910-2012) – Depicted in
this photo is a Giant sunflower that
looks as if it is dying. There are two young girls in this image standing
around this flower looking sad or neutral. This photo brings to mind the
“He loves me not” game you use on a flower. I think that he loves them
not.
- When
– The surrealist art movement began
in the 1920’s it was also a cultural movement. During this time World War
1 occurred.
- Why
– It was made to resolve problems of
dream and reality. To allow artists to bring to life fantasy and reality
together. Expressing their thoughts.
- Where
– Most of the surrealists were from
out of the country. Many were foreigners all with brilliant talent.
- Opinion – It allows us to see how simple life can be. Or it can display who we really are as people through everyday images. Also, it can exaggerate a statement or photo.
