These are the 3 three surreal paintings by famous surreal
artists that I found interesting:
Who: Max Ernst, Andre Breton, Pablo Picasso
1.Max Ernst: L’ange du Foyer (Fireside Angel) (1937)
This painting interested me a lot because it was really
looked menacing and bizarre, and also represented the triumph of the surrealism
against an ominous sky. Even though it was very clumsy, it still managed to
help lead the movement further. I was confused about this picture at first,
well it really wouldn’t make sense at first glance because of how bizarre it
looks, but if you look further into it and research it, it starts to make a
little bit more sense. The creature looks as though, it was menacing to people
that were against the movement, looking down upon those who were trying to stop
him. In the end, he ended up
crushing his opponents.
2.Andre Breton: Tortured (1920)
This painting, at least what I thought, has some very strong
symbolism in it and although bizarre, it proves a point. The man has thinking
that is trapped within only the western world, and wasn’t allowed to think
about other cultures, people would look down upon him if they did. He felt as
though nuts and bolts were holding down on the ground of western soil, his mind
trapped in a cage. He had to find a way to let his mind free and not be bolted
to the same soil all the time. This was a man that they were torturing, not
some machine that they can throw away at anytime. The man knows, he must free
the mind to prevent from being trapped.
3.Pablo Picasso: The old guitarist (1903)
I really like this painting because it shows the hardships
he went through during his Blue period. Influenced by the religious painting he
grew up with, he conveys what it was like when he was growing older in Spain.
This painting was part of the wider Symbolist movement of the period. Picasso
then dismissed his Blue Period as “nothing but sentiment”: critics agreed on
this but pictures still remained moving.
3. The movement occurred in the 1920’s, during the World War
II
4. Why: To make it so that dream and reality aren’t
contradicted
5. Most surreal artists, excluding Picasso, came from
France.
6. In my opinion, Surreal art is important to our culture
and imaginations because it helps people be more creative and come up with new
ideas for not just art, but other ambitions as well.
